| Double Bloom Daffodils |
[Apr. 11th, 2009|03:59 pm] |

Every year since I've planted these bulbs they have bloomed and then immediately the next day flopped over. I got one good shot of these before they flopped, but now two are down. I guess they need something in front of them to keep them supported. Hmm. You can see more photos of daffodils in bloom (non-flopped) by clicking the photo link. |

| Happy Spring Equinox! |
[Mar. 19th, 2008|01:11 pm] |
And I've only just begun to post garden pictures for the year at my Photobucket. This one from February shows the tulips emerging. They are in full bloom now, but it will take some time before I have those photos uploaded.
In my morning reading I came across the report that author Arthur C. Clarke has passed away. He wasn't someone whom I've read extensively, but his influence on thinking about the future has occupied the minds of many people. There has always been plenty of speculation, especially among the science fiction writing community, about his sexuality despite his own evasive denials, but according to this writer, the evidence supports the speculation.

| July Flowers |
[Aug. 8th, 2006|04:38 pm] |
Again, all I have to offer is more photos of my garden. The dry weather has taken its toll and the aphids have taken their two-cents worth, but plants continue to grow and put on flowers. It is a joy to walk through and see what next has begun to bloom.
If you look carefully in the picture below you can see one of the many tiger-striped catepillars living on the Dusty Miller. I don't know what variety of butterfly they will become, but if I figure it out I will post it here. The most recent photos start on page 14 of the photobucket album.

| Garden Pictures and I ♥ Huckabees |
[Jun. 27th, 2006|01:40 pm] |
There seems to be a pattern developing with these posts...
The garden has been blooming well and now seems to be in transition, as many plants are putting out buds. The hot weather has arrived and I've not been in much a mood for spending time in the garden. When I do go into the garden to work I find myself weeding mostly. Bruce has been doing a good job on the lawn which has been looking great this year.
We recently watched I ♥ Huckabees; Bruce didn't much care for it, but I found it both profoundly funny and silly at the same time. There's nothing quite so interesting and yet pointless as infinite navel gazing. It is interesting to note that the main character is played by the same actor who portrayed the young man in Rushmore. He has grown up a handsome fellow. |

| Napoleon Dynamite and garden pictures |
[May. 23rd, 2006|12:43 pm] |
Last night Bruce and I viewed Napoleon Dynamite from Netflix last night. I was wondering what all the hype was about when it came out a few years ago and as a film it pretty much delivers little more. But the characterizations are frighteningly accurate of my high school experience in Idaho, if a bit lacking the sort of cynical edge that might make the story more interesting. Hey, I actually identified with the main character, which perhaps shows how lacking the story really is, and how much in common I have with the filmmakers who grew up Mormon in a small Idaho town.
The garden, by the way, has been exploding in green growth and blooms after the week or so of dry, warm weather and now a warm front of moist air is bringing out the Iris so much more than the past two years. It helps that I've moved them to sunnier spots, but even the native yellow flag I was given two years ago is blooming in the same shady spot I planted it two years ago.

Unfortunately I've hit limits in my Photobucket account and am now deleting images to allow for new photos. Some of these images are no longer online.
I've posted more photos to my photobucket than I'm posting here so go there if this isn't enough to satify your desire for spring color:

| Planting by the Moon |
[Feb. 8th, 2006|12:27 pm] |
For the past year I've been informally investigating the benefits of following traditional times for planting. Basically you plant annuals and above ground crops when the moon is waxing in the early part of the month and plant perennials and root crops when the moon is waning. Also there are better traditional times for planting which coincide with where the moon is in its path along the ecliptic which is divided by the twelve signs of the zodiac.

| Garden Pictures |

I've recently posted to Photobucket the remaining garden pictures of 2005. At some point I may post them to LiveJournal with a running commentary. Please enjoy!

| I've been meaning to post these for sometime... |
[Jul. 9th, 2005|02:44 pm] |
Unfortunately I am getting to the limit of my Photobucket account and have begun deleting photos to make room for newer images.
The white poppies are blooming! They have been for the past several weeks and I regret that it has taken me this long to post the pictures. The plants have grown nearly six feet tall and the blooms are just brilliant and stunning to behold. The purple spots bleed slightly into the white giving the blooms just a hint of purple-pinky hue. |

| More garden pictures... |
[Feb. 12th, 2005|12:52 pm] |
Unfortunately my Photobucket is full and I am in the process of reducing its contents so many of these photos are no longer online.
I've been taking pictures of the garden nearly every week, but here are some of the more recent images:

I've planted primroses near the front walk way so everyone walking up to the house is treated to some bright color.

| School Days |
[Oct. 12th, 2004|11:50 am] |
Now what you are probably more interested in is what I've been up to recently. I started taking classes this fall at Seattle Central. I'm just focusing on basics, so I'm taking an English class and another in algebra. The algebra class is too easy and I'm running into the low self-confidence issues that prevented me from finishing any of the other English 101/Composition classes I took over ten years ago when I first attempted college. Everyone I know expresses surprise that I should encounter difficulty writing, my being something of a wordy intellectual. What they don't know is that I can only write in spurts when the moment moves me which is not very often. When I try to write any other time it comes out as drek. I will only be successful writing when I can teach myself to write no matter what, then when the moment strikes I'll already be writing.
I'm also still gardening on Vashon Island. There is no end to the things that need to be done for winter. Bruce has been helping me to put up a greenhouse and so far we have a foundation set. As soon as we have the winter wood we just bought, cut and put away, then we will have more time to put up the walls. I have a bunch of seeds to start in February and I'm really excited. We have several beds we are wanting to put in.
In September I made a bed out beside the garage with the rose bushes Bruce acquired this spring and filled it in with iris and tulip bulbs. In the spring when the garage is not overshadowing that bed, I think it should look spectacular. I've been filling it in with other plants, some poppies, marigolds and geraniums. I'll have to dig up the marigolds and geraniums and winter them in the green house but they will like the bed next spring, I think.
I've also been planning the garden around the fountain. I replanted a bunch of bulbs that were scattered in various beds and placed them in front of the fountain and am now in the process of placing several plants that will be taller behind the fountain. I'm not exactly sure of the plants but they put on various white bell flowers which are very pretty. There are also some lilies and foxglove.
The impatiens I planted under the cedar tree near the front of the house have all died back, in fact they almost look like something has defoliated them all. I'm hoping that they will reseed next year but I have other things to put in there next year if they don't. Also, if I can get my hands on some impatiens seed I definitely want to try to cultivate them again. They are very pretty in the front and I might try to fill the narrow bed between the path and the front porch with them.
It will be easier to see what has been happening with photos and someday I will post them here. I'm still trying to figure out where I'm storing the files. |
